How to show up as your best self

A short guide on presence, curiosity, and what actually makes a first date feel easy.

Most first-date advice is about what to say. The better question is what to pay attention to. A good date isn't a performance — it's two people finding out, in real time, whether they enjoy each other's company. That only works if you're actually there for it, not three moves ahead rehearsing your next line.

Presence is the whole game. Put the phone away before you sit down. Ask a question and actually wait for the answer instead of using the pause to plan what you'll say next. The people who leave a strong impression aren't the ones with the best stories — they're the ones who made the other person feel heard.

Be there before you arrive.

Curiosity does more work than charm. If you're genuinely interested in how someone thinks, that comes through, and it's far more attractive than a polished routine. Ask about the thing they mentioned in passing. Follow the thread instead of steering back to yourself.

And if it's awkward for the first ten minutes — that's normal, not a bad sign. Give it room to warm up before you decide anything.
